This discussion group was started by Jamie Whittaker to help her bird customers to get help on line if she was not avaialable. Her store, ABC Pets is located in Humble, near the Houston Airport. A lot of us are ABC Pets Junkies But the list has grown into more than what Jamie ever imagined it to be! There are several who are out of state....we have had members from Kansas, Michigan, Indiana, England and Australia.
Our list has grown into a soon to be non-profit organization helping birds when we see fit. We support local NPRPF, and make donations and contributions regularly. We can always be found at the Parrot Festival every year in Houston www.parrotfestival.org. Be sure and catch our party in parrotdise outfits, they are always interesting.
We are affilliated with the American Federation of Aviculture and a group of us have attended several of their annual conventions. Because we are a participatory group of folks we have helped with raffles, decorations, silent auctions, speaker introductions and just generally lend a hand wherever we can. We have coordinated the Texas state basket for the last four years and Texas has won every year.
We have fundraisers, and activities to help our birds and take every opportunity to further our knowledge and share it with other bird people. We do our best to stay educated
and informed. Beginning in 2008 we will be the new hosts for the Annual South Texas Avian Symposium. www.SouthTexasAvianSymposium.com
It may seem to you that all our activites are geared towards gathering in Humble and for the most part I suppose they are because that is where the most active people from the list live. We get together for toy making days at the ABC Pets Birdy Bees every month.
We have had gatherings at Chain O Lakes Camping Resort in Romayor TX near Cleveland several times...Someday, we are hoping to plan a trip to Belize www.bananabank.com. Debra came down from Kansas to join us at Chain O Lakes one year and maybe some of the other out of towners will make it to Belize or an AFA convention.
